Discussion with W4W
Women for Women International invites you to attend a
breakfast briefing from our Afghanistan Country Director Lina Abirafeh.
Come hear about Women for Women International's work in Kabul, how things
have changed for women in the past year, and our plans for the future.
You'll also have the unique opportunity to see pictures of the remarkable
work that the women in our program have accomplished. Women for Women
International has been working in Afghanistan since September 2002 and
currently provides 2,500 women with direct aid, rights awareness and
leadership training, vocational skills training, and income-generation
support. |

The oft-told story of immigrants adapting to life in the U.S. and the
inevitable clashes between traditional older generations and more
adaptable youths is given a new, often humorous twist in this story that
focuses on the travails of Afghan Americans. It was Afghanistan's
first-ever Oscar® entry for Best Foreign Language Film, and was completed
after the death of its director, who was brutally murdered in New York in
October 2001. |

Nilofar, a beautiful Afghan refugee in Pakistan, weds Shapour, another
Afghan living in exile in Paris. But their marriage turns into a bitter
emotional battleground when, after years spent in the U.S., her father
comes to rejoin her. This no-budget effort overcomes limited technical
means to depict the emotional entanglements of its characters with great
subtlety and deftly shows how war can permanently change families even if
it only plays a small part in their lives.

The mission of "Lifting the Veil" is to honor those who
have lost so much due to the recent events both in the U.S. and in Central
Asia, to remember those who fight to stop terrorism and violence, to
educate all on the issues of violation of human rights - particularly
against women - in Afghanistan and in the Middle East, and finally to
assist in bringing educational programs to those who need it most in
war-torn Afghanistan. |
