Marc 18, 03 Women in Afghanistan after the Taliban
First-hand accounts from the heart of the War on Terror will punctuate Soheir Stolba's lecture. Stolba, a medical anthropologist, recently visited Afghanistan to help develop women's organizations to improve literacy, provide vocational training for widows and assist women in starting small businesses. While there, she witnessed the cruelty of the Taliban regime and the resilience of the Afghan women. She will share their stories of courage in the face of war, poverty and oppression.

Mar 13, 2003 Rebuilding Afghanistan
Ms. Rachel Sahar - Lecturer, O.C. Human Relations Commission
Program Information: The terrorist’s attack of 9-11, and the U.S. occupation of Afghanistan that followed, kept worldwide attention on Afghanistan. The stories of the Taliban and Osaka bin Laden and the oppression of women have created an image of a medieval nation ruled over by merciless warlords and despots, but Afghanistan is far more. It stands as a country with a perilous journey ahead of it. Thursday’s Cox Forum guests, both from Afghanistan, will offer you an insightful look at the Afghanistan of today. A country struggling to rebuild after decades of war and political unrest.

Aug 26, 2002 Afghanistan Year 1380
Presented by  The IRC and the San Diego Public Library -
Filmed in Afghanistan in 2001 and early 2002, this documentary follows the continuing challenges for surgeon Gino Strada and medical coordinator Kate Rowlands, from the human rights group "Emergency." In an attempt to guarantee medical and humanitarian support to civilian war victims, they joined forces to set up a hospital in Kabul, only to see the facility shut down by the Taliban. In October, 2001, even with the city under heavy attack, they re-opened the installation. Certain scenes in the film are very graphics.
